Venus Williams

In 2013, Venus Williams was first elected by the Executive Board as a Member-At-Large. In addition, she also serves as a Local 1180 Staff Representative, a position she first began in 2008.

In 1983, Venus was hired by the Department of Social Services (HRA) as an Eligibility Specialist III. In 2007, she was promoted to PAA I and assigned to the Rider Food Stamp Center, where she was elected Shop Steward.

As a Staff Rep, she has won out-of-title grievances that resulted in thousands of dollars in back pay for members. She has effectively defended members facing disciplinary charges, saving them from dismissal or demotion, and eliminating fines and penalties.

In 2008, Venus became Chairperson of the Hispanic Committee. For the past five years, she has coordinated Local 1180’s contingent marching in the Puerto Rican Day Parade. She has organized both the Union’s highly successful pajama and backpack drives for children in need.

In 2014, Local 1180 started a new initiative to help members in the Bronx hold public officials accountable to the community. Venus was recommended by the president and approved by the Executive Board to lead that effort. The Bronx Committee has been successful in starting outreach to union members living in the Bronx and meeting with elected officials on community issues. It serves as a model for similar committees in all five boroughs of New York.

In 2017, Venus was honored by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. for her dedication to the Bronx.
