George Johnson started his civil service career with the Human Resources Administration (HRA) as an Eligibility Specialist III, helping New Yorkers with public assistance, food stamps, and Medicaid. He also responds to inquiries from the public and community organizations.

In 2004, George was promoted to Principal Administrative Associate I and immediately got involved as a CWA Local 1180 member. He worked his way up through the ranks to a PAA III, the title he still holds today.

In 2017, George was elected as a Shop Steward representing members at his worksite and encouraging them to participate in Union activities, such as the Equal Pay Rally, parades, and membership meetings. He participates in member grievances and alerts Local 1180 of management overreaching at his worksite. He represents the Union in agency walk-throughs and hiring pools, ensuring members are treated fairly and know their rights.

George attended the Shop Steward Bargaining Assembly and participated in electing the Contract Bargaining Committee. To this day, he continues to add value to Local 1180 as an active member of the Union’s Men’s Committee. He also volunteers as an Assistant Coach for youth ice hockey in Harlem.
